When I moved here in 1991, the downtown area was full of deserted buildings in various states of disrepair and only four businesses stayed open after 5 pm. Since that time I have watched my city grow into a thriving cultural center, rich in history, art and cuisine. In recent years, Asheville has consistently been on the list of “top 10 destinations”. However, this growth has come with a price.

In 2005, I looked around at the rapid growth and changing face of Asheville and my heart hurt. Our most valuable resource is our land: the beautiful and abundant mountains of Western North Carolina. I decided that in order to stay in the real estate business, I must work to defend this resource and develop our area in a way that helps to protect and preserve our land for years to come. As a lifelong teacher, I knew that the way to do this was through education. First I had to educate myself and then I could educate my clients.

True to the area’s progressive nature, the Asheville Board of Realtors was the first in the nation to offer an Eco Consultant Certification program. The program requires a minimum of 36 hours of training; as of now I have completed 50+ hours and will continue learning as much as I can about green housing, eco-friendly technology and minimizing each household’s environmental footprint. Last year, during my work with Beverly-Hanks & Associates Real Estate, I was one of three founding members of the “BH Go Green” movement, which works to address in-house environmental issues ranging from office recycling to educating co-workers on eco-friendly business practices. My hope is that through self-education and the education of each of my clients, we can work together to preserve Asheville as the “gem of the southeast”. I have taken the fruits of this intensive study and formed GreenArtisanHome.com with fellow BH broker Carol Pennell. As a mother, my desire to defend our natural resources takes on even more significance. I am not only working for the benefit of current residents and recent transplants, but I feel an acute responsibility towards my children and my children’s children. I truly believe that if we begin to change now, our positive impact will be felt for generations to come.
