At the eastern edge of the Swannanoa Valley is the Town of Black Mountain, often referred to as “the front porch of Western North Carolina”. Situated in the easternmost part of Buncombe County, this town attracts outdoor enthusiasts and nature types. The town prides itself on its sense of community and friendly atmosphere. It hosts many summer camps, festivals and religious conference centers including Montreat, Ridgecrest, Blue Ridge Assembly and Christmont. Black Mountain’s historic district offers diverse shopping opportunities with regional art and craft galleries, art studios, antiques, bookstores, and furniture stores.
Recreation is an important aspect that impels many to consider purchasing Black Mountain homes. Lake Tomahawk located on the north end of town is a 10 acre lake with walking trail, tennis courts, playground, picnic areas, gazebo, and performing stage. Fishing is allowed on the last and boating without a motor. Located northwest of town is the Black Mountain Golf Course, an 18 hole course spread over wooded hills that includes a small creek. Black Mountain is surrounded by biking and hiking trails in nearby Pisgah National Forest and is close to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Craggy Gardens, located north of Black Mountain, can be accessed via the Blue Ridge Parkway.
