Careers - Getting Started

Careers - Getting Started

A career in Real Estate has many benefits for those individuals that are goal orientated, self motivated and have an entrepreneurial spirit. Few careers offer the freedom and unlimited earning potential that real estate does. Few companies offer the training support and leadership necessary for an individual to maximize his or her income, especially in the critical early years of a career.

If you are considering a career in real estate, consider Beverly-Hanks & Associates REALTORS®. No other company in our area has the training programs and support services you will need to compete effectively.

Pre-License Education

  • Salesperson Applicants: To qualify for the real estate license examination, salesperson license applicants must have completed, within three years prior to license application, a Fundamentals of Real Estate Course at a school approved by the Commission. The course consists of a minimum of 67 classroom hours, and the student is required to pass the final examination for the course.
  • Broker Applicants: Broker applicants must have completed, within three years prior to license application, a Real Estate Broker Prelicensing Course at a school approved by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, in addition to the 67 hour salesperson course, which is a prerequisite for the broker course. The course consists of a minimum of 60 classroom hours, and the student is required to pass the final examination for the course. A broker applicant who is a licensed North Carolina salesperson need only complete the 60-hour broker prelicensing course.
  • Approved courses are offered through the local community colleges and technical school in both Asheville and Hendersonville as well as in private real estate schools

Testing for Salesperson License

  • Upon successful completion of the required classroom hours applicants must submit an application (provided by the school) and a $30.00 Application fee to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. Note: All applicants must submit a criminal records report with their application. Testing is done by computer at various locations throughout the state and requires a $75.00 fee.
  • A score of 75% or higher is required to pass the State Exam.
  • Anyone who is licensed in another state and wants to obtain a North Carolina real estate license should contact the licensing department at the North Carolina Real Estate Commission at 919.875.3700 and request the most recent License Law Book, which contains a detailed explanation of License Qualification Options and Required Documentation for either a Salesperson or a Broker License.
  • Upon receiving a Salespersons License the salesperson must be sponsored by a supervising broker with a real estate brokerage firm or the license will be placed on inactive status with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission

Continuing Education

  • To maintain a valid real estate license, licenses must renew their license annually and pay a $40.00 Renewal fee. Additionally, if the licensee is actively engaged in the practice of real estate, they must attend eight hours of approved continuing education each license year.
  • Four of the required classroom hours is called MANDATORY UPDATE and is written each year by the North Carolina Real Estate Commissions' Education and Legal department. Each year the UPDATE is on a subject or subjects pertinent to the knowledge of the real estate licensee for the protection and safeguarding of the general public.
  • The additional four hours of Mandatory Continuing Education consist of choosing to attend any of the numerous "Elective" courses that are approved by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.
