Located west of Hendersonville is Laurel Park, a premier residential, retirement and vacation area featuring spectacular views of the mountains and valleys below. Laurel Park was incorporated in 1925, and rises to an elevation of 3,000 feet.
The Town of Laurel Park started in the late 1800's as a summer resort featuring cottages, inns, camps, and recreation areas around the lakes on the lower slopes of Echo Mountain. It continued to grow and was bolstered by new rail lines. After the stock market crash, Laurel Park transitioned from a summer resort to a town noted for its year-round beauty, lovely residences and areas dotted with small lakes and pocket parks.
One of the most popular attractions is Jump Off Rock, a scenic overlook at the end of Laurel Park that offers a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Pisgah National Forest. Jump Off Rock is named for a 300-year-old Cherokee legend that when a young maiden heard that her lover had been killed in battle, she jumped off the cliff. Legend has it that on some moonlit nights, her ghost can be seen looking for her lover on Jump-Off Rock.
With a population of over 2,200, the vision of the town is to preserve and enhance its unique quality of life, making it the residential and small business community of choice in Western North Carolina.
