A SHORT INTRO TO MONTFORD’S RICH HISTORY
While most of the development in Montford was single-family residential, the neighborhood was dotted with private hospitals. Founded by Dr. Robert S. Carroll, a distinguished psychiatrist, the old Highland Hospital located off the northern end of Montford Avenue was the scene of a deadly fire in 1948. Among the victims was Zelda Fitzgerald, artist and wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Today the hospital features offices and shops, and Dr. Carroll's home, his Beloved Homewood, serves as a wedding and event space.
Historic Riverside Cemetery in Montford is the final resting place of a number of famous people, including authors Thomas Wolfe and William Sydney Porter (better known as O. Henry), Confederate General Robert B. Vance, North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance, and many others.
