Columbus
Located north of Tryon, near the intersection of I-26 and US 74, is the town of Columbus in Polk County. With approximately 1,000 residents, Columbus serves as the county seat. Unlike most other towns in Western North Carolina, Columbus wasn’t established because of its location near a railroad or body of water. Instead, the town was created because it is near the geographic center of Polk County and built specifically for that purpose. The 100 acre area was divided into lots, some reserved for civic needs, and the rest were sold. The money raised from the sale of these lots went to fund the erecting of public buildings, and the town incorporated in 1857.
