Touted as the "First Peak of the Blue Ridge," Polk County has long welcomed flatlanders to a higher altitude, offering foothills rich with history, culture, crafts, vast natural areas and unique culinary traditions.

Elevations in the county range from 300 feet to 3,200 feet. Most of Polk's 20,000 residents live in or near the county's three main towns of Saluda, Tryon, or Columbus. The county's largest body of water is Lake Adger, located about 5 miles Columbus.

The elevation in the county ranges from just under 800 feet near the confluence of the Green River and Broad River to over 3,200 feet on Tryon Peak and Wildcat Spur, the highest peak in the county. Polk County is divided into two regions; the Blue Ridge Mountains in the western third of the county and Piedmont for the eastern two-thirds. Since it is in a transition zone between the two regions, Polk County is often referred to as being in the foothills.

With an active equestrian community. Tryon Resort, a sprawling $100 million equestrian center and luxury resort, is opening this summer with the first events that could bring horse lovers and riders from across the country and the world.
