Brevard is a town surrounded by nature of the Pisgah National Forest. Brevard was named after Dr. Ephraim Brevard, a Revolutionary War colonel and surgeon who drafted the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. A monument of Dr. Brevard stands in front of City Hall.
Brevard is a growing community with a thriving downtown that features major chain stores, unique shops and fine restaurants. Just over 7,000 people call Brevard home and about 60 percent of the newcomers are retirees who long to return to a small town feel.
Brevard and Transylvania County is a nature lover’s paradise with many waterfalls, hiking, biking, and walking trails literally in your backyard. The Pisgah National Forest entrance is located in Brevard and includes more than 470 miles of hiking trails, 200 waterfalls, and land elevation that ranges from 1,000 to 6,000 feet. There are also more than 200 miles of well-marked mountain biking trails that have been hailed as some of the best in the Southeast.
Other well known attractions are Looking Glass Falls, the Cradle of Forestry, Forest Discovery Center, Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, DuPont State Park and perhaps the most interesting spot near Brevard is Sliding Rock. Sliding Rock is a naturally occurring, 60 foot waterslide that plunges into a seven foot deep pool. This spot is popular on summer days as visitors cool off by taking the plunge. The Davidson River offers opportunities for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and tubing.
