The Asheville area is now our home and we couldn't be happier, but it took a few stops for us to finally get here.
I was born in Fort Worth, Texas and still have family in the area. But I spent my Wonder Years in South Florida, then went to high school at Culver Academy in Northern Indiana. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and with a passion for writing and acting, I loaded up my late-model Chevrolet and moved to Los Angeles. I enjoyed almost 30 years in the entertainment industry, first as a performer for the comedy/improv group, The Groundlings, then as a television writer, producer and show-runner, writing for established network and cable series, creating pilots, and overseeing production staffs.
Karen was born in Canton, Ohio and attended high school at Culver Academy as well. From there she turned south, attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. After graduating, she headed north to New York City, climbing the corporate ladders at a number of money-center banks, and eventually running a private banking group at J. P. Morgan Chase
We met — “re-met,” really — at our 20-year high school reunion. (If you had handed me a script with that storyline, I would’ve told you to rewrite it and make it more believable.) Soon after, love, marriage, and a fortuitous transfer took Karen west to me in Los Angeles, in the Malibu area. While there was much to love about Southern California, we eventually decided it was time to move a little closer to our roots. We became great students of those "Places Rated" towns, and we’re thrilled having chosen Asheville. This area is a haven for service organizations, thanks in no small part to a curious phenomenon: Asheville is home to a generation of people who arrive here, only to realize they aren’t done yet. For two years, I used my management, writing and people skills toward nonprofit development, raising funds and awareness for Pisgah Legal Services, a team that provides free civil legal aid to low-income local residents. Karen in the meantime, joined the board of The Asheville Symphony.
There's so much to share here -- mountains, hiking trails, four great seasons, fabulous restaurants, golf around every corner, skiing a short drive away -- with friends and family who hold a common belief: That living the Good Life – whatever that means to you – begins by choosing where you want to live, not where you have to.

Karen's first career was in money center banking, working on the lending needs of Fortune 500 companies and later high new worth clients. After moving to the Asheville area in 2008, Karen took the opportunity to become a licensed mortgage consultant, working with a wide variety of clients. This experience has been invaluable, allowing her to provide necessary insight and advice to both our buyers and sellers. In 2012, she made the career move to real estate sales, a synergistic blend of the previous skills she developed during her career in private banking.
Don’s road couldn’t be more different, and his perspective as a successful L.A. television writer, producer and show-runner is unique in our world. His experience with marketing, creative writing, and getting the best from often disparate collaborators are just a part of his capabilities. In 2014, he joined Karen at Beverly-Hanks, putting his descriptive writing and marketing skills to work, creating a truly effective real estate team.

How is the tax bill of a home determined in North Carolina?
Real property is appraised at 100% of market value and includes land, buildings, structures, and improvements. State law requires counties to reappraise every eight years, but many counties reappraise every four. A bill can be a combination of tax rates. For example, a home inside the City of Asheville and Asheville City School districts will have three separate tax rates represented on a bill: the Buncombe County rate, the City of Asheville rate, and the Asheville City School rate. All rates are totaled to calculate the total tax liability. Tax rate estimates for our mountain communities can be found on page 127 of the Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks Welcome magazine.

Though Karen was on vacation when I first contacted her, she promptly returned my call, then quickly followed up with the results from her preliminary market research, the initial outcome of which we discussed. Her prompt, courteous and professional manner distinguished her from the other agents I was considering, especially because I did not reside in North Carolina, and thus knew I'd be more dependent upon my agent. She did not disappoint. When you're dealing with Karen and Don, you're dealing with experienced, attentive professionals. They knew exactly what was needed to stage the property to accentuate its best characteristics and proceeded to have brochures and videos beautifully created by experts. The property was effectively marketed in popular venues. We discussed showings on a regular basis. All required contract related documents were promptly provided for signature. Karen was always available to discuss negotiating strategies, and any and all issues, including the outcome of property inspections. She provided meaningful perspectives and advice, which I found indispensable in making critical decisions. There are too many agents that do not conduct themselves as professionals, and its distrubing and an unnecessary distraction when those with compromised standards are representing you and the sale of your property in the market place. The Woodards conduct themselves at the very highest professional standards, so there are no such worries or distractions when you've accepted them as your agents. Unfortunately, the listed property presented unforeseeable problems some of which where complicated to resolve, especially because I was not locally available to attend to them. So, I needed to rely more heavily on the Woodards then would otherwise have been the case in a typical residential listing. Yet, at no time did they ever waiver in their commitment to me or our commitment to sell the property. They went so far beyond the bounds of a typical agent in the unconditional commitment of their time and effort to get my property sold.
