About Me
Born and raised in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, I moved to Asheville in 1985 after graduating from Hillsdale College with a B.A. in Political Economics. The following year, I married Asheville native Leslie Byrd. We have a daughter and son who also live in Asheville.
Since arriving to Asheville in the 1980s, I have seen firsthand the immense growth of the region—all of which makes Asheville a unique place to live. During the summer, I enjoy spending free time with family and friends on Lake Summit in south Henderson County. You can find me there by a bonfire and playing a serious game of corn hole.
Experience
I began my real estate career after 25 years as an Asheville business owner. My family’s retail garden centers and wholesale greenhouses grew to include a landscape division. Through those connections, I came to work with developer Biltmore Farms on many properties marketed by Beverly-Hanks since the company’s inception. Some of these properties include Biltmore Park, The Ramble Biltmore Forest, Biltmore Lake, and South Cliff.
As your full-time real estate agent, I am able to incorporate this wealth of Biltmore Farms experience with all I have learned as a private real estate investor in both residential property and commercial development. As a business owner in retail, wholesale, and service industries, I have a true appreciation of how each real estate transaction may be the largest decision in a person’s life.

How is the tax bill of a home determined in North Carolina?
Real property is appraised at 100% of market value and includes land, buildings, structures, and improvements. State law requires counties to reappraise every eight years, but many counties reappraise every four. A bill can be a combination of tax rates. For example, a home inside the City of Asheville and Asheville City School districts will have three separate tax rates represented on a bill: the Buncombe County rate, the City of Asheville rate, and the Asheville City School rate. All rates are totaled to calculate the total tax liability. Tax rate estimates for our mountain communities can be found on page 127 of the Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks Welcome magazine.
