What does the architectural style “Craftsman” really mean?
Originally, the term “Craftsman” referred to a home built from plans featured in Gustav Stickley’s early 20th century magazine, Craftsman. The term came to mean a home built under the Arts & Crafts influence, which rebelled against the excesses of the Victorian era. The style fell out of favor with the advent of the even more casual styles popular after World War II, but has since surged in popularity. Arts & Crafts is less a style and more an architectural approach. Arts & Crafts homes emphasize the use of natural materials, dominant fireplaces, large front porches or sunrooms, low pitched roofs, and open floor plans.
