About Me

Shelle relocated to the Asheville area in 1997 because of the gentler climate and the friendlier, slower pace. In 1999, her love of and experience with building and development moved her to purchase 55 acres in Madison County. She subdivided the property, installed roads and utilities, and built her own passive solar thermal home (converted to active solar in 2008). In 2005, Shelle joined Beverly-Hanks & Associates, the top real estate company in WNC and continues her success with them today.

Born and raised in Ohio, she earned a B.A. in Psychology from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Shelle interned at Cornell Medical Center in White Plains, NY, and has participated in dozens of volunteer activities including assisting the blind, underprivileged youth, teaching special needs students and conservation based education. Her most recent volunteer efforts with local Animal Rescue groups resulted in the rescue and placement of over 200 homeless animals.

Shelle enjoys the eclectic atmosphere Asheville offers including local cuisine, fine dining, hiking and cultural arts. Horticulture and travel are two more passions of Shelle's. She has visited numerous Botanical Gardens and has been overseas several times to a total of eight countries, giving her the diversity to work effectively with all people. She enjoys North Carolina living on 20+ acres with her menagerie of farm animals and pets.

You can tell Shelle Ball loves what she does. When my wife and I were looking at houses, Shelle was excited when we were excited, and straight-forward with us when it seemed like we were less than enthusiastic about a property, even if we had nice things to say about it. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Shelle's instinctual "bad ju-ju" meter, or frank opinion when asked for. A defining Shelle moment: while my wife and I were driving around we unexpectedly found an amazing house according to our needs and wants and called Shelle after office hours, intending to leave a message asking for a showing as soon as possible, within the next couple of days or so; she got us through the door in 30 minutes. This was the house we ended up buying, and she lived and died with us over the next month after that night until we signed on the dotted line. The challenges we faced to get the house were her challenges, and sometimes she was more frustrated that we were (in a good way) with anyone giving us less than their best in helping us move toward buying our home. Shelle was invaluable to us as first-time real estate buyers learning to navigate the systems involved. She was patient and eager to explain each step, and encouraged our learning and keeping track of everything along the way. When occasionally blind-sided by an unexpectedly difficult part of the process, within a short time Shelle came back with a clarification or more often with a creative solution to what was happening, even if we hadn't expected any easy solution was possible. Understanding would be one of the key words to describe Shelle. My wife and I are rather different people, reacting differently to the various difficulties of house-buying; Shelle understood those differences and responded according to what was most helpful to each of us individually and as a couple. That understanding helped develop sense of trust in Shelle that, while not blind, was strong enough to safely say that we relied on her counsel without worry or trepidation. You can tell Shelle Ball loves what she does. When my wife and I were looking at houses, Shelle was excited when we were excited, and straight-forward with us when it seemed like we were less than enthusiastic about a property, even if we had nice things to say about it. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Shelle's instinctual "bad ju-ju" meter, or frank opinion when asked for. A defining Shelle moment: while my wife and I were driving around we unexpectedly found an amazing house according to our needs and wants and called Shelle after office hours, intending to leave a message asking for a showing as soon as possible, within the next couple of days or so; she got us through the door in 30 minutes. This was the house we ended up buying, and she lived and died with us over the next month after that night until we signed on the dotted line. How is the tax bill of a home determined in North Carolina?

Real property is appraised at 100% of market value and includes land, buildings, structures, and improvements. State law requires counties to reappraise every eight years, but many counties reappraise every four. A bill can be a combination of tax rates. For example, a home inside the City of Asheville and Asheville City School districts will have three separate tax rates represented on a bill: the Buncombe County rate, the City of Asheville rate, and the Asheville City School rate. All rates are totaled to calculate the total tax liability. Tax rate estimates for our mountain communities can be found on page 127 of the Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks Welcome magazine.
