Located on Vermont Avenue in the back of a residential neighborhood, the 8.6-acre West Asheville Park is home to Gassaway Field, a Little League baseball field. West Asheville is Green

A running theme in West Asheville life is sustainability, and residents show a strong preference for local products. You can see that from the crowds that gather at the West Asheville Tailgate Market that runs Tuesdays afternoons during the season. Green building, farm-to-table dining, and even discounts at local shops for bike riders are just a few of the ways that West Asheville works to boost green living. 

West Asheville also comes alive through bountiful community flower and vegetable gardens. The neighborhood has a long tradition of urban farming going back to the first Burton Street Agriculture Fair, which celebrated its centennial in 2012. Today’s residents still show it proudly in their well-tended gardens and backyard chicken coops. Businesses and homeowners alike take pride in beautifying the neighborhood with plants and flowers, as well as integrating unique sculptural elements.   1. You may want to be careful about proselytizing your neighborhood! As someone who once lived there, and now lives in an “it” city, in the “it” neighborhood — that recently(ish) experienced a MASSIVE population increase / popularity blow up, I can tell you, it was not good. Rent became astronomical, housing affordability simply unattainable, and prices elitist to the rich. Then, there were the evictions, house flipping, overseas property owners, razing of properties to be replaced with luxury condos, “accidental” fires (that ousted long time building inhabitants), displacement of most immigrants, a vast gap in wealth, and a gutting of art, personality, soul, and culture. It was awful. And we became a case study of what NOT to do in other big cities. Unless you are seeking a population growth, be careful what information you choose to advertise!

  2. so, i recently learned that west Asheville at some point was called “worst Asheville.” apparently the usual happened white folks came in, gentrification, which i call theft, and changed the neighborhood. now it’s way too expensive for the original occupants, and even expensive for those said white folks who moved in during the awesomeness – ultimate sarcasm – of gentrification. just more folks being Columbus

  3. People have the right to live wherever they want. A lot of cities could say they don’t want anyone else coming to their area but that’s not going to change what’s happening. It’s tough all over.

    I would love to relocate to that area, but can’t afford it. Guess what? I am a native New Orleanian and we feel the same way. Gentrification, and ppl moving here with wads of money have priced the locals out. We don’t want them here. So I get it. Really.
