Here are four spots for live theatre in Hendersonville, NC.
Flat Rock Playhouse

This Sunday marks the 61st annual World Theatre Day. Celebrated on March 27, the international event is coordinated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) to promote theatre in all its forms and share the joy of theatre with others.

Sadly, it’s a little early in the season to celebrate on World Theatre Day with a local performance. However, there’s always time to plan ahead! Here are four spots in Hendersonville, NC where we’re excited to see live theatre performances this season.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Built in 1838, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is a 264-acre working farm and the former estate of poet and author Carl Sandburg and his wife, Lilian “Paula” Sandburg. Carl spent the last 22 years of his life on the estate and wrote more than a third of his works here. Descendants of Paula’s prize-winning goats still live on the farm. In addition to tours of the house and access to miles of trails, the home hosts a number of regular events. Among them is the “Sandburg Summer Plays” series. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories this summer with free live performances held at the park amphitheater.

Flat Rock Playhouse

The Flat Rock Playhouse, North Carolina’s state theatre, traces its history back to 1937. Located in the heart of the Historic Village of Flat Rock, the community touchstone stages Broadway-quality musicals, comedies, dramas, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse has gained national recognition for its professional performing company and theatre training programs. Their season runs year round, with more than 100,000 patrons attending shows each year. This year’s schedule includes “Catch Me If You Can,” “West Side Story,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

Hendersonville Theatre

The first inklings of Hendersonville Little Theatre began in 1966. Over the decades, the all-volunteer theater thrived and drew crowds from Henderson County and beyond. Today, the Hendersonville Theatre continues to embrace local playwrights. And they reach out to younger audiences as core tenants of their community mission. Many fun performances are coming to their main stage this season. Get your tickets for “Sister Amnesia’s Country Western Nunsense Jamboree,” “Red, White, and Tuna,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and “The Haunting Of Hill House” (just in time for Halloween).

Thomas Auditorium, BRCC

Lastly, head to the campus of Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC). Their Thomas Auditorium is an elegant and well-equipped performance hall that seats 430 people. Its large stage and theatrical lighting system support the Visual and Performing Arts Transfer Program, among other campus and community events. Students pursuing an Associate of Fine Arts in Theatre must both participate in and critique a live theatrical production, many of which happen here. Keep an eye on the Thomas Auditorium’s events calendar for upcoming campus productions throughout the season.
