In early 2000, Birmingham-based interior designer Betsy Brown was visiting Saluda when she happened upon a charming log cabin tucked away in the forest. She’d always wanted a little place in the woods as a mountain retreat, and this cabin with hand-hewn logs captured her heart. Three years later, the home came on the market, and Betsy bought it and the 12 surrounding acres, sight unseen. When she returned to the property for the first time, she discovered one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Green River Gorge that she had ever seen.
After the initial shock of such good fortune wore off, Betsy began the work that’s made her one of the most sought-after designers in the country. But instead of drawing upon the personal palette of her clients’ lives to create a portrait in which to live, this time the feeling of home was hers to envision and create.
She immediately called on one of her closest friends, renowned architect Paul Bates, to help her design the quintessential mountain cabin. Every detail was considered, reconsidered, and refined until it was perfect. To execute the vision, Betsy tapped Geoff Rose and his team at Green River Builders, which specializes in high-end residential and custom commercial construction.
Over the next two years, the home was renovated and decorated to bring that vision into sharp focus. Walls of steel and glass maximized the stunning views and welcomed in natural light. Doors were constructed of steel and glass, and custom cabinets were installed. Antique oak, reclaimed from Amish barns in Ohio, was used for the walls, beams, and ceilings, as well as slabs of local soapstone for countertops and the living room fireplace.
Every surface was touched, “expanding on the authentic and deleting the superfluous,” as Betsy puts it. A collection of carefully curated furniture and decor began to fill every room for a delicate balance of form and function. Among them, a 17-foot custom dining table of reclaimed oak was placed at the center, which would soon gather family. The primary bedroom features the home’s original wood-burning fireplace. A guest house offers privacy for anyone lucky enough to be invited to enjoy these views.
Now, more than 20 years after that first chance encounter with a little cabin in the woods, and a multitude of cherished experiences later, Betsy is ready to share one of her most personal creations with the world—or at least with one lucky buyer. Make this unique home yours, or settle for viewing its upcoming feature in Garden & Gun.
