When you were young, who did you look up to? Who made a difference in your life? Who set you on the path you’re following today?

At Beverly-Hanks, we give generously of our time and support every day for the benefit of our community. Our giving is generally limited to the causes closest to the hearts of our leadership, agents, and staff. Last night at our most recent Karma Keg for Charity event, the crowd decided which local charity deserved additional support this season.

Through the local affiliate programs of Big Brothers Big Sisters, children facing adversity are given access to new experiences that help them build higher aspirations for themselves, eventually giving them the support they need to Live the Life You Choose.

Thanks to last night’s crowd, we’re able to donate $1,783 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Henderson County, which works hard to lead local youth through long-term relationships and supportive services. Take a moment to learn more about this valuable organization and its branch offices.

What is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina is our local branch of BBBS America. Their mission is to “ensure every child in WNC has an enjoyable, long-term relationship with a caring adult who believes in them and sees their potential.” The organization provides ongoing activities, training, and support services for both families and volunteers. And when children are matched with a “Big,” they gain a long-term role model. Bigs help their Littles achieve academic improvement, grow their self-confidence, and develop a variety of life skills.

In 1975, local courts in WNC called upon what was known as the “Friends” organization to provide volunteers for juvenile offenders. By 1982, this program evolved and became officially affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Today, BBBS of Western North Carolina serves 10 WNC counties and has impacted the lives of more than 14,000 local children.

The branch offices of BBBS of Western North Carolina are:

  • Buncombe County
  • Burke County
  • Cashiers
  • Cherokee County
