Nonprofit Spotlight: Conserving Carolina

The most amazing thing about living in the mountains of Western North Carolina is the mountains of Western North Carolina. At Beverly-Hanks, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity and means to Live the Life You Choose. For those who love our mountains, that means preserving their beauty for years to come. Today, we highlight an organization that has made great strides in local conservation efforts.

What is Conserving Carolina?

Like a new bloom rising from last year’s bulbs, Conserving Carolina is a new organization with roots that trace back nearly 30 years. Not too long ago, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy (founded 1994) and Pacolet Area Conservancy (founded 1989) joined together to build a larger community of local environmental advocates. Together, Conserving Carolina works to protect and conserve natural resources in Western North Carolina for future generations.

To date, Conserving Carolina has conserved more than 44,000 acres in WNC and Upstate South Carolina and developed 32 miles of trails. They also treated more than 700 acres for non-native and invasive plants in 2017 alone.

Take the Hiking Challenge

Conserving Carolina hosts regular educational workshops, volunteer opportunities, outdoor adventures, and community events to promote stewardship and an understanding of the natural world. And there’s at least one event you, your friends, and your family can do on your own.

The Pardee & Conserving Carolina White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 4 introduces you to eight new hikes on Conserving Carolina protected lands. The hikes offer something for everyone, from gentle strolls to more strenuous climbs. And as a bonus, Hiking Challenge 4 champions who are Conserving Carolina members or Pardee participants receive a congratulatory package once the challenge has been completed. So, grab your camera and your hiking pals, and check out the challenge today!
