At Beverly-Hanks, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity and means to Live the Life You Choose. While our focus as a company is in Western North Carolina, some of our agents have their sights set much farther. Today we’re highlighting a locally based, volunteer-led nonprofit with a mission focused on an island nation whose needs hit close to home.
What is Consider Haiti?
Consider Haiti was founded more than 15 years ago to provide primary care clinics, medicines, vitamins, and water filters to the people of Haiti, one of the the five poorest nations in the world. “We host medical teams in Haiti, primarily treating malnourished children,” says Beverly-Hanks associate Todd Kaderabek. “Related, we engage a half dozen Haitians full time in the follow-up care for those children and their families.”
The nonprofit followed up in 2010 with sustainable nutrition programs—initially in the form of 17 does and a buck. They have since provided more than 750 goats across several villages.
“Probably closest to my heart is the sustainable nutrition program,” says Todd. “We provide pregnant goats to families in need. And we train them in the care and best practices of animal husbandry and the associated economic benefits. We also teach management of small scale agricultural crops for both nutrition and economic gain.”
“I love the goats,” says Todd. “They’re hard-headed like me—plus, they taste great.”
Todd has worked with Consider Haiti for 15 years. After leading numerous groups to the country to participate in and observe their work, he finds it hard to pick a favorite program. “They’re all related and intended to work together toward the same goal: to promote the health and welfare of children in Haiti,” says Todd.
Water Your Garden, Help a Child in Haiti
A butterfly flaps its wings and whips up a hurricane. Rain falls in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and children in Haiti get clean water.
“People in Western North Carolina should support Consider Haiti’s programs because they have the opportunity to make a choice,” says Todd. “Haitians have few choices living in a very challenging environment. We have gifts of time, skills, and financial resources that we should all give in abundance.”
Give a little (or give in abundance) and get back in return through Consider Haiti’s current rain barrel fundraiser. Pre-purchase an Ivy 50-gallon rain barrel through the organization before Earth Day (April 22), and some of your purchase goes to support Consider Haiti’s clean water and other programs. Rain barrels can be picked up the following Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Fifth Season Gardening in Asheville.
