Nonprofit Spotlight: Folkmoot USA

Better than reading a book or watching a screen, the best way to experience a new culture is to experience it in person. For many, full trips around the world are not feasible summer plans. But for residents of and visitors to Western North Carolina, one nonprofit offers the next best thing. The Folkmoot Friendship Center brings the cultures of the world here to WNC.

Nonprofit Spotlight: Folkmoot USA

What is Folkmoot?

For 35 years, the Folkmoot Friendship Center has been the headquarters for the two-week Folkmoot USA international dance and music festival. Folkmoot is North Carolina’s official music and dance festival, welcoming more than 100,000 people to enjoy performances from 8–10 international dance groups each summer. Performances are held across WNC, including in Asheville, Cherokee, Franklin, Hendersonville, Lake Junaluska, Maggie Valley, and Waynesville.

Folkmoot means “meeting of the people” in Old English—and the festival is certainly designed to do just that! Events provide opportunities for cultural exchange, from meeting the performers to learning their native dances.

What’s Happening This Year?

From July 19–29 2018, attendees will experience cultural activities, dance instruction, live music, and performances by groups representing the Czech Republic, Ghana, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Northern Cyprus, Thailand, and Venezuela, as well as from nearby Cherokee. Performers are primarily college students who serve as cultural ambassadors for their countries, making Folkmoot a strong example of international cultural diplomacy.

On Saturday, July 21, don’t miss the Parade of Nations down Main Street in Waynesville! Each group greets the crowd with dance and music in their traditional cultural dress. After the parade, check out Many Cultures Day at the Folkmoot Friendship Center. Then on Saturday, July 28, International Festival Day will be held in downtown Waynesville—a big street festival with international crafts, performances, and much more.
