Did you know that last year, Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools reported more than 750 homeless children enrolled in area schools? Today, we are profiling Steadfast House, a division of a local nonprofit that is working hard to provide those children a steadfast home.
What is Steadfast House?
Steadfast House is a division of the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM). The organization provides stability to homeless women and moms with children. Through programs and support, women learn professional skills, education, and training that equip them for employment and sustainable housing. Children are paired with mentors who help them keep up in school. And families and individuals are provided reintegration skills and opportunities that lead to greater self-determination.
Steadfast House Programs & Goals
Women at Steadfast House attend a variety of life skills classes to build esteem, manage emotions, develop and maintain sobriety through recovery, and practice skills that lead to jobs for life. They set short-term goals that lead to big changes, including getting their GED or driver’s license, finding childcare, and managing a household budget. These small goals lead to long-range goals, like building careers and securing permanent housing. Through all this, they value having female mentors to empower and equip them for the future. ABCCM offers training and support in these relationships.
Be a Program Partner
These adult programs have a lasting effect on the children involved, but they benefit directly from Steadfast House’s services, as well. If you’re interested in making a long-term impact, consider becoming a Steadfast House Program Partner. Volunteers are consciously paired with a child in the program to serve as a supportive, safe, and consistent partner. You would eat dinner with your child’s family each week and be responsible for one-on-one activities with him or her that meet the program’s curriculum.
