After serving our nation with honor, it’s reasonable for veterans to want to return home and start a new life of civilian service. Unfortunately, many veterans who leave the tightly-focused community of the military struggle with feelings of isolation after rejoining civilian life. The lack of tools, support networks, and resources available leads to alarmingly high rates of divorce, homelessness, depression, substance abuse, and suicide among veterans.

That’s why organizations like Veterans Healing Farm are so important. Through their programs, struggling veterans across our region are given meaningful activity and a freshly cultivated sense of self worth.

What is Veterans Healing Farm?

All veterans face challenges when transitioning from military life back to the civilian sector. Veterans Healing Farm in Hendersonville aids struggling local veterans by facilitating holistic education, interpersonal relationships, and personal empowerment.

The farm offers workshops on innovative farming techniques to foster their thriving micro-community of veteran farmers. They also support veterans by growing and donating high-quality fruits, vegetables, and flower bouquets to veterans and their caregivers free of charge. Core programs include:

VA Produce Donations – Since 2015, more than 35,000 pounds of produce and hundreds of flower bouquets grown by veteran and civilian volunteers have been donated to the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville—feeding both the body and the soul.

Farming Boot Camps – Single- and multi-day training sessions teach veterans about sustainable farming and holistic health, including organic farming, beekeeping, off-grid energy systems, animal husbandry, yoga, food preservation, composting, medicinal herbs, and more.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy – VHF partners with Heart of Horse Sense to offer equine therapy workshops. Equine therapy helps veterans learn self-acceptance and exhibit more empathy with family and friends.

PermaTribe Farm Community – Members of the PermaTribe Community share farm responsibilities and in return receive organically grown fruits and vegetables for their personal consumption. This innovative concept fosters interpersonal relationships, self-empowerment, and peer support.

Donations and sponsorships help Veterans Healing Farm provide veterans access to the therapeutic and uplifting benefits of farming and interpersonal relationships.

For the community, VHF regularly hosts potluck meals, farm camping, and other community building events. Join them to experience a place where friendships are formed, burdens are shared, and healing takes place. Members bring meat to grill and pair with the farm’s produce. Children fly kites, kick balls, throw frisbees, and play tag in the field. And everyone congregates around the fire pit to relax and talk. It’s a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
