Main Street Waynesville, North Carolina, is a place where people walk, where people work, and where people share their lives with each other. At Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks, we’re proud to have an office (pictured above) located at the heart of this vibrant and easily traversable downtown. Each day, we treasure our opportunity to help people find homes in this amazing mountain town. But we also value being able to take advantage of everything downtown has to offer!

From coffee shops and eateries to antique shopping, craft breweries, and an abundance of art, Downtown Waynesville has a multitude of things to offer residents and visitors alike. It’s almost impossible to decide what’s best about downtown. So instead, here are just five of our favorite places within walking distance of our Main Street Waynesville office.

Axe and Awl Leatherworks

It’s not a Realtor’s job to look stylish, but it certainly gives us confidence with our day! And one of the best places in town for designer-quality goods is Axe and Awl. The company started as a hobby out of a garage workshop in 2015. But in a few short years, they’ve developed into a thriving business, joining the downtown scene in 2021. They offer a variety of durable goods and apparel, including belts, wallets, and bags—as well as items for pets! They also offer several products designed for members of the fire service, including Agdor axes and hatchets.

Orchard Coffee

For those who prefer an early start at the office, Orchard Coffee is a great first stop for handcrafted beverages and baked goods. This award-winning coffee bar and bakery offers all of our favorite specialty coffees. And we know their made-from-scratch breakfast menu plants the seeds for a successful day. But Orchard isn’t only a favorite for early risers. They’re regularly open until 5:00 PM, making them a great place for a pick-me-up throughout the day. Sometimes, they even host music at night! So, stop by and start your morning with the perfect cup o’ joe.

Sassafras on Main

Waynesville is a great town for residents of all stages in life. And the place where you will see young mingle with old is Sassafras on Main—a shop for kids of all ages! Entering the doors of their book and toy store is like entering a world of imagination. From Main Street, you have easy access to their toy floor, filled to the brim with indoor and outdoor toys from all the brands you love. Pop around to the Wall Street entrance and you’ll be at the bookstore floor. They carry books and literary gifts for everyone, from board books to the latest fiction bestsellers.

Sweet Onion

After a long day of work, nothing wraps up the day like a quality meal! Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Sweet Onion Restaurant offers regional cuisine with contemporary flair. Try traditional favorites like pot roast and fresh mountain trout, or expand your palate with the Thai peanut chicken and rice noodles or wild mushroom ravioli. Whatever you do, don’t miss their signature sweet onion soup and sweet onion chicken parmesan. And save room for one of the scrumptious house-made desserts. Everyone in the family will love Sweet Onion!

Public art & galleries

Technically not just one “place,” we love the abundance of public art and local galleries within steps of our door. As you walk up and down the tree-lined sidewalks of Main Street Waynesville, you’ll spot two-dimensional and three-dimensional art along every block. Along with fine shops, restaurants, and cafes, public art adds to Waynesville’s small-town charm. These “Old Time Music” fiddlers are among the most popular pieces to admire and with which to take a selfie.

In addition, downtown art galleries showcase a wide breadth of talented artisans and craftspeople. On a monthly basis, these galleries offer meet-and-greets, featured shows, refreshments, and live local music through Art After Dark events, which run May–December.
