The relatively new residential community of Straus Park was recommissioned in the late 1990s from the original Camp Straus, adhering to a “mountain harmony” philosophy. The nearly 315-acre development located across from Transylvania Regional Hospital offers a modern camp-like feel with sleek homes, a seven-acre mountain pond, an active clubhouse and pool, and its own business park complete with medical facilities, a veterinarian office, and organic grocery store.
Camp Straus was created shortly after World War II by Harry Straus, owner of the then-operational Ecusta Mill. The plant employed a large number of local residents, and Mr. Straus hosted frequent activities at the camp for employees, their families, and the community. Many of the original features of the camp remain, including the pond, meadow, and hiking trails, all of which harmoniously intertwine with the residential development of today.
The community covers an alarming elevational range, thereby creating a wide variety of residential opportunities, from condominiums to townhouses to luxury homes, with exceptional mountain views. Residents enjoy access to a community-use clubhouse with seasonal pool, the seven-acre pond, tennis courts, community garden, and growing business park.

Straus Park is a beloved community, reflective of its original status in Transylvania County. Historically significant and sleekly modern, Straus Park offers residents the best of mountain life, with hiking trails, a large, vibrant meadow, and green pond usually filled with ducks and canoes.
Residents all over the county have a story or two of adventures in Straus Park when it was operated as Camp Straus by Ecusta Mill owner, Harry Straus. Shortly before redevelopment, the pond at Camp Straus was the only area offering free swimming lessons in Transylvania County. The camp boasted that nearly every kid in the county had once waded past the salamanders and tadpoles to take their first dip. Residents from all over the nation now call Straus Park home.
Driving through Straus Park, you will find yourself waving at neighbors walking dogs, enjoying the sound of kids playing in the pool, and taking a brief stop to allow Canada geese to wade across the street. Neighbors and friends alike catch up while shopping at the organic grocery store. Families meet for playdates in the open meadow. Green-thumbed friends bring the garden to life starting in the early spring. Summertime brings community-wide events in the clubhouse, with music and laughter spilling from the timber-framed building down to the pond.
