It's just a few miles from the Asheville Regional Airport and right next door to some of the best spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The town is served by Glen Arden Elementary School, which opened in 1971 and expanded in 2001. Part of Buncombe County Schools, Glen Arden has been names a School of Excellence for the past seven years, meaning that at least 90 percent of its students are at or above the grade level. Glen Arden is one of the only two schools in North Carolina to achieve this status. In 1996, Avery's Creek Elementary opened it's doors to students, followed by Koontz Intermediate (5th and 6th grade) in 2011.
The community is bordered to the east by the French Broad River and just down the road from the North Carolina Arboretum. An extraordinary public garden that adjoins the Parkway, the 434-acre Arboretum has 65 acres of cultivated gardens and 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, hosts one of the most unique bonsai collections in the country, and stages a steady stream of exhibits on subjects ranging from mountain quilts to rare plants.
