The Reverend William Graves purchased the land for this frame home in 1857, and in 1861 Americus Barnett supervised its construction. The home's three chimneys feature bricks made by Josh King, a slave. Graves, who was Pastor of the Davidson River Presbyterian Church and supplied Mills River Presbyterian Church once a month, lived in the home until his death in 1896 at age 95. He is buried in the Mills River Presbyterian Church cemetery. The Mark Brittain family purchased the place after Rev. Graves' death and lived there until they sold it to Ed and Julia Brown in 1926. The Browns owned the home until 2000, when Carolyn Brown Whitaker, heir, sold it to Dr. Richard Edney. The home still stands near the intersection of Old Turnpike Road and Highway 280.
