McDowell county lands include the Pisgah National Forest, which covers 67,000 acres, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which forms 30 miles of the county's northern border, Catawba Falls and the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

The vast 446 square mile countryside of McDowell County includes Marion, Old Fort, Little Switzerland, Linville Falls and Lake James. The population of McDowell County was 44,961 in 2013. Elevations here top out at 4,000 feet above sea level opening up to views of the green valley floors below.
