Directions: 1-240 east to X73, turn right on Bat Cave Rd, travel approximately 7 miles and turn left into main entrance of Gateway Mountain. From the security gate drive 0.2 miles up turn right and around the flagpole to the stop sign. Go straight across the intersection onto ”McKenzie Way South” On McKenzie Way South drive 1.1 miles to “Kents Trail”. Turn left onto Kents Trail and 0.5 miles to “McKenzie Way North 3000” Turn right on “McKenzie Way North 3000” and continue on “McKenzie Way North 3000” for 0.4 miles. After 0.4 miles on McKenzie Way North 3000 you will come to a somewhat curved T (a water storage tank will be on your right), turn left for approximately 50 feet and turn right onto Sally Gap. On Sally Gap travel 0.2 miles to Bear Mountain Rd on your left. Turn left on Bear Mounatin Rd and travel approximately 0.2 miles and turn right at Elderberry Lane and continue up the road. Old Fort festivals include popular annual events such as Pioneer Day hosted by Mountain Gateway Museum on the last Saturday in April. The North Carolina Gold Festival is held the first Friday/Saturday in June, also on the grounds of Mountain Gateway Museum. Old Fort's Chamber of Commerce continues their annual event with Octoberfest taking place the first weekend in October, again on the grounds of Mountain Gateway Museum. This is a N.C. state museum and is part of the N.C. Dept. of Cultural Resources.
