The grandeur of the Biltmore Estate made Asheville appealing to the wealthy, drawing the rich and famous to the area in the 1910s and 1920s. As a result, a number of residential subdivisions emerged that remain as some of the older, more established neighborhoods in Asheville. In the late 1920s, Mrs. Vanderbilt sold 1,600 acres to establish a luxurious suburb with spacious lots and modern amenities.
